Period 1: Test on Island of the Blue Dolphins is Monday. Today, we had a Fire Prevention Program and we only had time to review the end of the story questions. It was time well spent! We discussed the difference between the theme of a story and the main idea identifying both from Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Period 2: Students completed selection test. (Have your second AR book read and tested by Monday.)

Period 3: Students revised tall tales and read AR books. (Earn your 10 AR points by Monday.)

Period 4: Students began the selection test for Island of the Blue Dolphins and were encouraged to spend time reading the story over the weekend, since the test was not completed.

Period 5: Finished Test and read AR books - (Have your second AR book read and tested by Monday.)

Period 6: Read AR books and revised tall tales. (Earn your 10 AR points by Monday.)

Period 1: Answer questions 2 and 3 on page 84 in your notebook; Test on Island of the Blue Dolphins is Friday so please read the story and study the key vocab. We will review the vocabulary before the test.
Period 2: Make a list of ten things from the story that help one visualize and understand the island as discussed in class. For example: one of the items discussed were the sea elephants. Karana could see them and hear them. TEST IS FRIDAY ON THE STORY.
Period 3: Finish selection test and bring your AR book. I will also be working with students to make revisions to the tall tale rough draft.
Period 4: Test on story and vocabulary is Friday on Island of the Blue Dolphins. We will review the vocabulary prior to the test.

Hello Parents and Students,
We will be reading "Island of the Blue Dolphins" this week. Tentatively, we will read the selection during whole group instruction on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, we will begin to read leveled readers in small groups in addition to the main selection. Some students will take the selection test for "Island of the Blue Dolphins" on Thursday and some students will take the selection test on Friday as I am working with students in groups.

Homework for Monday: All periods will complete RWB page 24 (do not complete the "Write a Letter" section)
Tentative Assignments for Tuesday-Friday
Tuesday: Read Island of the Blue Dolphins; WB 23
Wednesday: Read Island of the Blue Dolphins; Write 5 sentences that highlight the most important events that tell what the story is about.
Thursday and Friday: Selection Test

Period 4: We are continuing to read Thunder Rose.
Period 5: Students are working with an assigned partner to identify cause and effect relationships from Thunder Rose for a project.
Period 6: Students have begun to write their tall tales.

I enjoyed the day at the zoo especially seeing the "big cats." I hope your child also had a fun day and learned some interesting things. We 're lucky to have the Philadelphia Zoo close enough to make it a field trip! Enjoy the weekend and thank you fifth grade parents for your help on the field trip.

Thursday is Field Trip Day! Thank you PTO for your help in making this trip possible.

Attention all parents of students in Mrs. Malick's homeroom:
Please arrive at school no later than 7:15 am. We are scheduled to return at approximately 5:30 pm at the elementary building.
Your children know where to stand in the morning outside of the school while waiting for the coach buses. Also, the students have their seat assignments. Of course, teachers will be there to supervise. It will be an enjoyable day!

Attention Chaperones: Please park your vehicle in the lower parking lot of the high school. Also, zoo maps and names of students in your group will be given to you the morning of the trip. Thank you.
